Hallo Leute,
(wegduck)

R2 Builders,
I just returned from a rollercoaster ride at the Offcial German Premiere of
ROTS in Berlin. Most of you will remember that my R2 and me got invited by
Centfox last week.
It was just an R2 builders and a fan´s dream....
Not-so-good things first: My R2 did not go onto the stage with George Lucas
for his speech before the movie. They wanted Lucas to sit in the audience
and then get onto the stage via some stairs, and it would have looked silly
if R2 would have to be carried up the stairs.
BUT, and now we come to all the BIG FUN stuff:
This was a really huge premiere event in the movie theatre that usually
houses the famous Berlinale film festival. Centfox had build a huge red
carpet, with space for the hundreds of photo and TV jourmalists on both
sides. When the big stars finally showed up, there were several thousand
fans standing behind the fences.
And we were on the VIP side of the fence, driving R2. One of the really big
advantages of an R2 is that he is a great excuse that you have to be very
close to the action if you don´t want to run over some celebrities´ foot.
<grin>.
SO, just out of technical neccessity, my wife Britta (my charming droid
assistant) and myself were standing right at the entrance to the red carpet,
when the limos showed up.
The guest stars were (in order of appearance):
Sir Christopher Lee
Rick McCallum
Hayden Christensen
Natalie Portman
George Lucas
Every one of them (except Rick) then walked up to a TV team just three feet
to my left and got interviewed there, right beside my R2-D2. George Lucas
was supposed to be broadcast live, so he had to wait for a few minutes less
than an arm´s length away. We had to sign an agreement beforehand that we
would not talk to the stars, or ask for autographs, so Britta snapped away
with her camera like mad., while I tried to control R2. But there was such
thick crowd around Lucas that there was not much controlling to do. AND R2
is invisible on most of the pictures with the stars, because he was
surrounded by all those staff people. R2 is simply too small for such
occasions....
And then after the TV interview, something happened that nobody had
expected: Instead of walking on into the theatre, Lucas and all other stars
(except Sir Christopher, understandably at this age) walked over the street
to the huge crowd of fans and shook hands and signed autographs for about 20
minutes !!
YES, Uncle George, Mr shyness himself, shaking fan´s hands for 20 minutes !
He walked the whole length of the fence, so that everybody got their
autograph; it was incredible. The crowd was wild with shouts and applause.
Finally we all went into the movie theatre, and settled into our seats. Rick
Mc Callum held a short introductory speech and called every star onto the
stage; Sir Christopher and George receiving standing ovations. Then George
held a very short speech about the movie.
And then the movie rolled....
Ah, yes, the movie. There´s some R2-related stuff in there that I don´t
really like. R2 has some scenes that are supposed to be funny, but I don´t
like that kind of slapstick humour in such a movie. We´ll surely discuss
this the next weeks. And I wish I had my scooter drives ready. My old
Saturn-type drives had a hard time on the thick red carpet, which had also
become wet during the night, so it was very slippery.
All in all, it was a day long remembered. Probably it will be the crowning
jewel in my R2 builder´s career. And it shows how far you can get with an
R2-D2. I don´t want to make you envious (OK, a little bit), but I hope this
to be an inspiration to all newcomers to persist in building their own
droids.
